One day implants (immediate implants) is commonly confused with “Teeth in A Day” (immediate load implants). Both terms are used to refer to dental implant treatment techniques or implant process methodology. 

One day implants applies when existing teeth that can no longer be restored is extracted and the dental implant posts is placed in during the same surgical visit in one day. Immediate implants is only done where there are no contra-indications or infection in area and may not be suited for all cases. If there is poor bone condition or infection (abscess) within the area, the immediate implants concept is unlikely applied.

Teeth in a Day refers the stage whereby after implant posts are placed, a crown or fixed dentures is immediate loaded over the implants posts during the same time period without waiting for the implant post to fuse with jaw bone. Teeth in a Day is the marketing term originated from Nobel Biocare’s All-on-4 surgical technique protocol. In the 2000s, Straumann overtook Nobel Biocare relating to their All-on-4 and coined the new marketing term ProArch.  Both All-on-4 (by Nobel Biocare) and ProArch (Straumann) uses to the same Teeth in a Day concept.

Implant Treatment Process Concepts 

• Immediate Implants (one day implants): existing teeth is extracted and the dental implants post placed on during the same surgical visit
• Immediate loaded implants (Teeth in a Day): temporary or permanent fixed prostheses are loaded over the implants post shortly after implants post are embed in jaw
• Conventional implants : the most commonly done and safest concept whereby dental implants treatment is done in two phases. During the first phase, the implants posts is inserted surgically into your jaw bone. The dental implants posts is left to heal for at least 2 months and more. During the second phase, the final false teeth (or prosthetics) us made and fitted over the implant posts.

How do I know if I can do One Day or Teeth in a Day?

An initial examination, panoramic x-ray film and/or in certain cases a CT scan is typically done by your dentist during implant treatment planning. These help determine your bone condition and positioning.

One day implants or Teeth in a Day typically requires a minimal sufficient bone volume and density. There is no infection in area. And patients should not have have immune compromised disease as it can reduce healing and reduce success rates. Bruxism and smoking also plays a factor on suitability.

One day implants are for selected cases and may not apply to all cases.

• It is less invasive as teeth extraction and implant placement is done during the same visit

• In cases where there is no contra-indications, bone may be retained as the implant posts acts as the new tooth root immediately.
